There has been quite a lot of algorithm references this week, and the key ones I want to call out are brands that are succeeding at messaging and communicating what their brand is all about.
GAP’s Seamless Campaign and e-commerce Approach
GAP’s recent campaign is a great example of nostalgia, being online and still feeling fresh. They have taken their recent campaign, and applied it to their e-commerce website - actually improving from the e-commerce experience as well as keeping their tone consistent.

North Face Racial Inclusion Course
It was recently announced that North Face will give customers a 20% discount if they simply complete a 1hour racial inclusion course - amazing, and definitely necessary because apparently a few white people are up in arms about this, yikes. Here is the link to the course! Let’s all do it!

The Future of Phone Cases
People are recreating a version of the Rhode phone case and I’m here for it. If Casetify can copy the suction phone cases, other people should make phone accessories that hold our lip products!!!

Another year, another Tarte influencer trip that has received a lot of backlash. The last trips that made headlines, the Miami trip racism, or the Dubai trip - the key frustration from the public is the idea that these trips are “tone-deaf.” It’s easy to agree with this sentiment, however, it’s not that simple. The Founder herself acknowledged that was that most brands spend millions of dollars on a single Super Bowl advertisement and other campaigns but it seems less overt and harder for the general public to calculate the costings and therefore more acceptable. It’s hard to not think that most people who are extremely angry about this are either jealous of the trip or are already chronically online and want to complain about something. Most brands and influencers are tone-deaf and out of touch, but these moments still increase engagement with the founder confirming that Tarte still sees an increase in sales after each trip.
Letterboxd is thriving as a platform and a brand - thanks to its solid positioning and its recent TikTok videos where they are asking celebrities about their top four films and are edited in a very satisfying way. These videos are great too, because even amongst the comments section people are discoursing what each celebrity is saying or boasting about coming across someone like Ayo Edebiri’s reviews. Letterboxd has been able to form communities by tapping into people’s desires to be a part of IYKYK culture, our obsession with movies and a continuous increase to track/optimise any of our behaviours. The platform has gone from 2 to 12 million members since 2020, and this article, clearly says that the core appeal of Letterboxd is that it’s casual, fun and low stakes - exactly what people are constantly yearning for.
